The hammer throw is one of the more difficult technical events to learn. After the basic turning action is taught, turning and throwing medicine balls like a hammer is the first drill I use to teach multiple turns and releases. Since the winding action in the hammer throw takes time to perfect with the hammer, using a medicine ball to the throw like a hammer will develop the proper footwork with a release.
I like to teach the hammer with multiple turns, working up to 10 turns in a row staying within one lane of the track. Beginners learn to turn with a hurdle board or golf club. When the hammer thrower is ready to learn how to release, I like to use medicine balls and work up to three turns with a release with a light medicine ball.
